Meet James Eichbaum

James Eichbaum is one of the most trusted and experienced digital forensics trainers in the field, with decades of experience in both training and active investigation.

A global background in Training and Investigation
As a former investigator, Global Trainer Manager, and technical instructor for some of the world’s leading digital forensic companies, James has delivered training across multiple continents and helped shape how organizations and governments handle forensic investigations.

The vision behind Elusive Data
After training thousands of investigators and maintaining a constant dialogue with participants, the idea for Elusive Data began to take shape. James committed to building a learning experience grounded in practice. One built around real case data, interactive labs, and the belief that real understanding comes from doing. He also knew training had to be more accessible. Investigators need fast access to the knowledge required to act quickly, make sense of complex data, and solve cases without delay.

Founded in 2024
This belief led him to found Elusive Data in early 2024. His goal: to make digital forensics training more hands-on, immersive, and relevant to the real challenges professionals face every day.

Industry recognition and impact
James’s work has earned recognition across the industry, including awards like the High Tech Crime Investigation Association’s Case of the Year, where his forensic findings led to a landmark conviction, later covered by Forensic Focus.

Today, Elusive Data helps forensic professionals worldwide learn faster through immersive, practical training. Courses include interactive labs, CTF challenges, and real-world exercises, all built around real case data. Training is available in multiple formats: on-demand, live online, and on-site.

Micro-learning when time is short, and for greater flexibility
For those moments when time is limited or the next on-site class is too far away, Elusive Data also delivers focused micro-learning modules. Short, targeted sessions that help professionals build specific skills fast. These are currently delivered live online, often tailored to organizational needs. Many of these modules will soon be available on-demand for even greater flexibility.

“You don’t always have weeks to spare, but you still need to know what to do, and be ready to explain it. That’s the gap we’re here to close.”
— James Eichbaum, Founder

James and the team continue to support active investigations through expert consulting and forensic services. For a field that never stands still.

Proven methods. Held up by results.

Every case depends on the details. Know how to uncover the ones that hold.

When you’re working a case, there’s no room for guesswork.
You need to understand how apps store data, how to find what tools miss, and how to explain your findings in ways that stand up, in court, in internal review, or under cross-examination.

That’s exactly what our training is built for.

At Elusive Data, we deliver forensic education that reflects real investigations. You’ll work with real case data, explore unsupported apps and raw mobile files, and practice writing reports that hold up under scrutiny.

Our courses are created by professionals with deep law enforcement and investigation experience, shaped by the feedback of thousands of learners. Everything is designed to help you move faster, dig deeper, and deliver findings you can stand behind.

We train police investigators, forensic analysts, corporate consultants, and those preparing for their first role, all with the same goal: To build real skills that hold up when there’s no margin for error.

Trusted by investigators worldwide

Sarah M. Digital Evidence Specialist

Thank you for a great course! I finally get how to work with unsupported apps. That clicked during this course. I’ve done a few trainings before, but this one stood out because it was actually useful right away. The instructor explained how app data is stored in a way that made sense, and I really appreciated all the real examples. I’ve already used a few techniques in a current case.

Carlos G. Forensic Lab Tech

Very good course! Incredibly good teacher and I think that distance learning works at least as well as in the classroom! Thanks again James! Great balance between technical depth and hands-on labs. I liked that we didn’t just rely on tools, but looked under the hood and made sense of the data. It’s definitely helped me write clearer reports and explain findings to investigators.

Emily N. Digital Forensics Student

Best course I have ever taken. I really enjoyed the week, learned a ton, and everything was clear and easy to keep up with. The labs felt real and made sense, even without loads of experience. The instructor explained things so clearly and made it all feel manageable. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone working with mobile forensics.

Élodie L. Digital Analyst

Wow! I’ve taken other training that felt like a sales pitch. This was different. Everything was clearly explained, and I didn’t feel stuck to one tool. If your work involves unsupported apps or deleted data, this course is a must!

 Martin H. Digital Evidence Analyst

Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. The way the instructor broke stuff down, especially all the app data really made it fun. James really knows his stuff and kept things moving without overwhelming us. Took away real techniques I’ll use back at work. Keep up the good work, James!
